Commerce police are looking for a Jefferson man and his accomplice following an attempted armed robbery at a Chestnut Street address.
Details are sketchy, but the incident that occurred Tuesday, Sept. 30, apparently stemmed from a bad drug deal, according to the victims’ son.
What is known is a black male knocked on the door of the residence and asked for the couple’s son, who was not home. When the man learned the son was not home, he asked to borrow a telephone to make a call.
When the 56-year-old white female went to get the phone, the man stepped into the house, put a stocking cap over his face and produced a pistol. A second black male also entered the house.
The first suspect put the gun to the head of the 52-year-old white male and demanded his wallet. That turned out to be a mistake.
The woman began hitting the armed man and her husband grabbed him, trying to take off the suspect’s mask. The two fled, with the armed would-be robber firing a shot as they beat a hasty retreat.
Police questioned the couple’s son, who admitted that he knew one of the perpetrators. That suspect had given the son money to buy marijuana, but the son never produced the drugs.
Commerce police contacted Jefferson police, who knew the driver of the Dodge Charger that had left the scene. They held him and later arrested him on a Barrow County warrant.
The case remains under investigation.
