Jefferson may have grown bigger than Commerce since the last census, but Commerce residents call their police more often.
A breakdown of calls for police through 911 indicates that Commerce residents call police one and a half times more often than their counterparts in Jefferson.
In September, 911 dispatched 2,376 calls for the Commerce Police Department and 1,534 for Jefferson.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office led all agencies with 6,327 calls.
At the other end of the scale, 911 dispatched zero calls for the Maysville Police Department. In fact, 911 has dispatched only eight MPD calls this year.
All told, counting 911 calls, walk-ins and school resource officer calls, the Commerce Police Department fielded 2,679 calls.
Those calls resulted in the filing of 29 accident reports and 101 incident reports. Officers cited 149 motorists for speeding, 72 for seat belt or child restraint offenses, made 30 arrests on theft-related charges. The department also cited six people for driving under the influence, eight for driving without insurance and 11 for license violations.
Commerce’s Fire Department is also the busiest in the county. It was dispatched 28 times during September, according to a document from the 911 office. Jefferson and West Jackson ran second with 22 calls apiece.
Commerce records indicate 27 calls for service during the month, 12 of which were to respond to auto accidents. Firemen responded to two structural fires, three grass or woods fires, two vehicle fires, two garbage fires, two cases where they found no emergency upon arrival and were recalled en route to two calls.
