A 30-year-old Commerce woman called the police because her son “would not listen to her.”

Responding to the Pine Avenue address, the officer talked to the young boy, who said his little brother had been annoying him, so he told his mother to “shut up because he was nervous,” the officer said.

The mother asked the officer to file a written report, and the officer said he advised her on how she could follow up.

In other news, last week the Commerce City Council learned that even though Jefferson is now the largest municipality in the county, Commerce police officers receive 50 percent more calls than their Jefferson counterparts.

That's just wonderful. Take away time that could be spent solving real crime. I detest when parents tell their children that if they don't behave the police will take them to jail. That's great parents, have your kids terrified of cops. The ones that are supposed to help them when they need it. While I think the cop should not have responded to this ridiculous call, I can also understand that they have to make sure there is not some deeper problem going on.This woman needs to take control of her kids. You can ask your child's doctor about behaverial problems and for tips on how to discipline your child. That would be the first thing I would do instead of calling the police to your house. This lady just showed the child that she will not deal with his attitude and had to call in reinforcmnets. So the next time the child acts up or lashes out who will she call, because she just proved to the child she is able to handle him.

Maybe the police department can send her an invoice for the call. With the city's budget issues, this may kill two birds with one stone.

I understand that kids can push you to your limits.
I have three myself and they are always fighting. But the
truth is she has to learn to handle them. Before to long
they will be stronger than the mom. And if they don't learn
to respect her now than she is in trouble. She needs to seek
some help from a family member or friend that can give her
some advise.

a trip to the wood shed is in order for that 10yr old paddle his behind and he will have a new outlook! and thats not child abuse ! folks now say that kid needs therapy in my day if i spoke to my mother like that i would need a undertaker !

right after I picked myself up off the floor with a sore mouth(from the back hander my mother would have given me) I would have realized that saying shut up to my mother was not such a good Idea.

I am sure there is a bit more to the story than what is stated.
In defense of the mom though, you can give that swift back hander anymore, you can't take them out behind the wood shed, or no type of discipline i and my siblings received. That is now called "Child Abuse".
I can understand to a certain degree why the mother may have called the police officer, maybe for a bit of a scare. And, kids should have a sense of fear for police officers. Not enough of them do! That's why we have gangs, children having no fear, or respect for authority.
I am in great hopes that the police officer took this opportunity to really talk to this child, and encourage him to have a bit more respect for authority.
Maybe this will play in the back of his mind thinking, "Hey, i better stay cool, she called the cops on me at 10, i know she'll do it at 16."
If we could just go back to the Good ole days, were spankings were the key to good behavior. But, now it's the key to a lock door for 5 to 10 yrs.

i completly understand what your talking about however the is no law against corpral punishment i learned this first hand by the police dept ! i got a call about my son being in trouble and was at wits end about what to do about it and said out loud that he needed a trip to the wood shed whereas the officer responded its not illegal in ga !! my son has been very good ever since !

My father NEVER believed in spareing the rod.
Neither did my 4th grade teacher. My teacher used to give us 10 words each day to spell and if we mis-spelled two or more, we go a WHACK ON THE BACKSIDE with a large wooden paddle in the back of the class room.
DISCIPLINE is NOT Child Abuse. Just use COMMON SENSE.

Now kids think you can't whip them anymore.If you say your going to whip them they say they will call the police and have you arrested for child abuse.If I would have ever said that to my mother she would have slapped me and if I made the threat about calling the police she would have said fine but to tell them to hurry because she would whip me until they got there.
They say to whip a child hurts their social growth? Bull. That's why kids Today don't show respect. Let me ask a question? If our parents had disrespected their parents this way we wouldn't be here. Or if they had told any adult to shut up they would have got their butts tore up and not just a swat on the butt. It would have been with a thick leather strap. I still remember the big thick strap hanging in the kitchen at my Grandparents.I ask one time what it was for and my Dad told me it was for which ever child misbehaved.
