The city of Commerce has decided not to form a special police unit to enforce safety standards on large trucks.
Drivers of large trucks won't have to worry about a Commerce police motor carrier compliance unit. The city decided not to create the special unit.
Commerce drops idea of 'motor carrier compliance' unit
Mayor Charles L. “Buzzie” Hardy Jr. made the announcement last Wednesday to members of the Commerce Area Business Association.
Forming a “motor carrier compliance” unit was proposed by the police department as a means of slowing down and reducing truck traffic in the downtown and to help in its drug interdiction efforts.
“After much discussion and opposition, that idea is dropped for now,” the mayor said.
Later, Hardy said the matter more or less died for lack of support.
“Just talking among ourselves, really,” he said. “Clarence (Bryant, city manager) didn’t hear anything positive. We didn’t either. It sounded like the start of something that would cause a lot of problems.”
And cause a lot of opposition.
“There are a lot of truck drivers in the area,” the mayor noted. “We heard from a lot of them. It was just one of those things that didn’t appeal to many folks. There certainly wasn’t any uproar wanting us to do it.”

Its a sad day when you put public safety over a few complaints. Guess our city councilmen are afraid they might not get re-elected if they vote for something that could save lives and infrastructure in their fair city.
