Lady Eagles place sixth in region

After delays due to rain, the East Jackson girls’ track team was finally able to wrap up their region meet last week. The Lady Eagles finished sixth at region with 47 points. The East Jackson boys’ track season came to a close at the Georgia Olympics at Jefferson this past weekend, with two Eagles placing, while two others finished in the top 10. Commerce schools suffer continued funding cuts

Major state funding cuts for education are showing up on the Commerce School System financial ledger.

Reductions in monthly Quality Based Education (QBE) allotments — basically, the state’s education funding program — totaled $112,167 in April alone in Commerce, according to school system reports. Prior to April, the monthly cut had been just $7,819.

The Jackson County and Banks County boards of commissioners face a dilemma. BJC Medical Center has asked for a $3.7 million cash infusion to help keep the hospital and nursing home open.

A combination of factors has brought the hospital to the edge of insolvency. Federal reimbursements for Medicare and Medicaid have not kept up with the cost of providing service, and the recession has led to increases in the amount of uncompensated care. The result is a multi-million dollar deficit.
