Late payment of property taxes hurts schools, governments

Property tax collections throughout Jackson County are running about 2.5 percent behind schedule, adding to the financial pinch for school systems and local governments.

Tax commissioner Don Elrod billed $68.2 million in 2008 property taxes for the county, various municipalities, fire districts and school systems. A 2.5-percent lag in payment amounts to a $1.7 cash shortfall for those groups compared to what had been paid by the end of June in 2008.

Jonathan Wade Roberts of Pendergrass, with a wet towel over the abrasions on his arm from the airbag on his Chevy Colorado truck, watches uneasily as Commerce fire and police personnel push the truck back upright following a two-vehicle accident Friday on Old Maysville Road. The truck wound up on its side on the shoulder of the road. Roberts refused transport by ambulance; no one was seriously injured.

Our president has just completed 200 days in office. That is a little over six months, or roughly one-eighth of the four-year term to which he was elected last November, at a time when America’s situation was so desperate that people were trying to press him into service prior to his inauguration, and he had to remind the nation that we could only have one president at a time.

Seymour gets life for murder of wife

A Commerce man was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday morning for murdering his wife.

Martin Seymour, 31, was sentenced by Judge Currie Mingledorf to the life sentence with the possibility of parole. He would not be eligible for parole for 30 years.
