The unemployment rate for Jackson and surrounding counties crept back up a notch during June, following a statewide trend, the Georgia Department of Labor reported last week.

The jobless rate for Jackson County rose three-tenths of a percentage point to 11 percent in June, compared to 10.7 percent in May.

It was a strong close to the 2010 swim season for the Commerce Tiger Sharks over the weekend, as all 10 swimmers that qualified for the Georgia Park and Recreation State swim meet in Tifton medaled in their events. While it considers the June 26 City Lights Festival to be one of the best yet, the long, hot day has the Downtown Development Authority contemplating major changes in the annual festival.

While it made no decisions at its June 21 meeting, the DDA appeared to have a consensus to shorten the one-day event and phase out the crafts booths while focusing on music and food. [Full Story »]
