The Commerce baseball Tigers continued their winning ways last week, shutting out both Social Circle and Tallulah Falls by a combined 22-0 score. The wins leave the Tigers 7-2 in the region, trailing undefeated Hebron Academy at 8-0, and 8-2 overall. There must be something in the water at the state capitol that compels our Representatives and Senators to waste time on frivolous legislation.

For example, Georgia will pass legislation regarding immigration — a federal matter — modeled after legislation in Arizona, where state business leaders are seeing the economic consequences of that bill; and some genius decided to introduce legislation dictating who can be on a presidential election ballot in Georgia. Last we heard, the Constitution pretty much settled that issue. [Full Story »] 

Commerce police assist in manhunt for cop killer

Like most other law enforcement agencies in Northeast Georgia, the Commerce Police Department participated in the investigation leading to the Friday evening arrest of Jamie Hood for the murder of Athens police officer Elmer “Buddy” Christian March 22.

Hood surrendered at 10:20 p.m. on live TV at a location just off the Commerce Road following an intense manhunt. Four hostages with Hood at the time were unharmed.
“Our canine unit and four detectives were involved,” said Commerce chief of police John Gaissert. [Full Story »] 

Earth Day shaping up as big day downtown

Earth Day — Saturday, April 16 — is shaping up to be a very busy day in downtown Commerce.

It’s the day for the Commerce Fire Department’s chickenque, which brings in hundreds from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and local merchants will hold a “tent sale” of closeout merchandise in the trackside parking lot at Spencer Park.

In addition, a large body of citizen volunteers is expected to show up to pick up litter, plant flowers, power-wash sidewalks and address other aesthetic issues in the downtown.
Mark McCannon briefed the Commerce Downtown Development Authority on the plans at its March 23 meeting. [Full Story »]

Before a crowd of approximately 200 people huddled under a massive tent in the parking lot, BJC Medical Center transformed into Northridge Medical Center Wednesday afternoon.
