The East Jackson Lady Eagles golf team saw its season come to a close last week, as the Eagles took part in the 8AA Region Tournament at Scales Creek Country Club in Banks County. Some Nicholson residents are concerned about a veterans memorial being removed from the town’s public library.

At the monthly work session meeting of the Nicholson City Council Thursday night, April 21, two local residents voiced their concern about the recent removal of the military wall of honor at the Harold S. Swindle Public Library.

The Friends of the Harold S. Swindle Public Library group recently made the decision to take down the wall of honor and put the photos in a carousel “Book of Heroes” in the center of the room.

Jobless rate continues to fall

Sometimes its scarcely noticeable, but the unemployment rate in Georgia — and Jackson County — continues to trend downward.

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Monday that the state’s preliminary unemployment rate was 10 percent, down two-tenths of a percent from February.

Jackson County’s jobless rate for March is pegged at 10 percent, down from 10.6 in March. [Full Story »]

“What happened?” I found myself wondering during the city’s Easter egg hunt at the First Baptist Church.

The question came at the egg hunt years ago as I watched dozens of moms scrambling across the front yard snatching up “eggs” for their children. It came back last Saturday.

Suspect wrong: cops could arrest him

An Oxford, AL, man insisted to Commerce Police officers that he could not be arrested for sitting on his porch cursing, but it turned out he was wrong.

Roger Eugene Diekmann, 34, 5 Heatherwood Lane, Oxford, AL, was arrested for disorderly conduct after an incident at Country Boys RV Park, Mt. Olive Road.

Responding to a report of a man cursing, officers found Diekmann sitting on the steps of a camper talking to another person and asking “what the (expletive deleted) is going on?” and “what are the (expletive deleted) cops doing here?” [Full Story »]

The Commerce golf teams wrapped up their seasons with a trip to Highland Walk for region competition last week. The girls finished third, while the boys came in sixth. The girls shot a 234. East Jackson’s Nick Fulks took top honors as the region champ in the shot put and in the discus at the 8AA boys’ region meet at Jefferson over the weekend. Fulks will be the lone Eagle heading to state competition, as East Jackson placed fifth overall with 37 points. The Eagles trailed region champ North Oconee (154.5), Elbert County (153), ...
