When is $1.5 million reduction in revenue considered good news?

When you were expecting a cut of about twice that much.

That was the reaction from the Jackson County School System last week when it got preliminary figures showing that the tax digest for education fell by 4.83 percent this year. At one point, the system was bracing for a 10-percent reduction and considering a 20-percent cut as a worst-case scenario. [Full Story »]

For most local public school students, this is the last week of summer freedom — as they’ll return to school next week.

Students in the Jefferson City School System will return to class on Monday, Aug. 1, followed by Jackson County School System students on Thursday, Aug. 4. Commerce students, however, have another week off before heading back to school on Monday, Aug. 8.

Man charged with hitting mother of his miscarried baby

A 23-year-old Commerce man faces simple battery charges after he allegedly struck the mother of his unborn baby a day after it miscarried.

Details of the case are sketchy, but Commerce Police Department officers responded to a Martin Luther King Jr. Drive residence at 2:49 a.m. where a 29-year-old white female claimed that she and Bryan Oneil White, 23, of 544 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, had been drinking together.

The “Gang of Two” deficit reduction Committee of the Beardsley household met in caucus last week.

“We’ve got a revenue problem,” said the female member, holding up a sheaf of what appeared to be unpaid bills.

Nearly 30 Commerce High School players took the field last week at Stephens County High School for one of the Tigers’ final 7-on-7 scrimmages.

Players hiked, passed, caught and intercepted the ball. They covered receivers on defense, rushed the passer and executed plays.

But what the Tigers did not do is hit.

High schools fall short of making AYP

Three of the four public high schools in Jackson County failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under the initial assessment released last week by the Georgia Department of Education.

Commerce, East Jackson and Jackson County high schools came up short of making AYP as required under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Only Jefferson High School made AYP thus far.
However, countywide, just one other school, West Jackson Middle School, failed to meet AYP.

Commerce children will be able to experience a “beach party” Friday, July 29, without even leaving the town.

The Commerce Downtown Development Authority will hold its annual beach party from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Spencer Park downtown.

Thieves work Woodland Heights Subdivision

Thieves worked the Woodland Heights subdivision last Wednesday, but after entering one residence and numerous vehicles had little to show for it.

According to the Commerce Police Department, the first complaint came from a 46-year-old white male Woodland Trail resident who said someone entered his pickup truck, went through its contents, lifted the hood and removed the truck’s battery.

Massey leads Tiger Sharks at state

Kate Massey edged competitors last weekend to earn two individual state swimming championships and an additional first-place medal with her Commerce Tiger Shark teammates.

Her effort led the local group at the 2011 GRPA State Swim Meet, held July 22-23 in Tifton. The team produced a series of strong finishes, with each of the 10U girls competing well in particular.
