Hart County's Stephon Eades ran for 198 yards and four touchdowns Friday as the Bulldogs overpowered East Jackson 30-10 in Hartwell. East Jackson (3-3, 1-2) has now lost two straight. Tigers overwhelm Golden Eagles, win region opener

Commerce dominated Athens Christian on Friday, beating the Golden Eagles 41-0 and winning its first Region 8-A game. Playing before a large homecoming crowd, the Tigers seized a 28-0 halftime lead, scoring 21 points in the second quarter. Jackson County hires a new manager

The Jackson County Board of Commissioners’ search for a new county manager ended Friday afternoon.

In a unanimous vote, the commissioners hired Kevin Poe, who will be 51 in November, to fill the position. He is currently the Floyd County manager, a position he’s held for 17 years.

Poe will be paid $140,000 and will begin work no later than Dec. 11. [Full Story »] 

City reservoir full; Bear Creek falling

Rainfall filled the Commerce reservoir last week, but the level of the Bear Creek Regional Reservoir continues to fall.

“The reservoir went back to 697.6,” observed Bryan Harbin, Commerce’s director of water and sewer operations.

The number refers to the height of the lake’s surface in feet above sea level. Harbin said 697.6 is full for the city reservoir.

Jobless rate creeps up to 10.4%

Jackson County’s unemployment rate crept up a tenth of a percent between July and August, according to figures released last week by the Georgia Department of Labor.

The DOL put the county’s jobless rate at 10.4 percent for August, compared to 10.3 percent in July. Georgia’s jobless rate for the same period fell two-tenths of a percent to 10.2 percent, while the rate for Northeast [Full Story »] 

OPINION: CHS SAT scores deserve some attention

For the second year in a row, the Commerce High School scores on the Student Assessment Test (SAT) were below the state average. Scores from the Class of 2011 were 86 points below the state average — which is in the bottom 10 states in the U.S. They dropped 50 points from last year’s dismal score.

That is intolerable for the city school system. To their credit, school administrators admit disappointment and seem eager to see what happened exactly. We await some kind of explanation, some reason to think that this trend of falling scores is an aberration.
