Sometime in the next two years, Dr. James Bouchard proposes to build a grocery store and a medical office building on Nunn Road just off Hwy. 98 (Maysville Road).

The Commerce Planning Commission voted Monday night to recommend that the city council approve Bouchard’s request to rezone three tracts comprising a total of 24 acres from AF (agriculture-farm) to C-2 (general commercial). The city council will act on that recommendation at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 12, in the Commerce Room of the Commerce Civic Center.

The big announcement Nov. 18 that Bed Bath & Beyond would open a distribution center for online sales in Pendergrass was certainly a coup for Jackson County. The process by which the company made the decision is also illustrative of how economic development works.

The project first arose in June. The announcement came in mid-November. In the months between, the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce and the Jackson County Industrial Development Authority spent countless hours providing information and putting together an incentive program that led to the ultimate decision. It was a long, costly and tenuous process with which economic development officials are very familiar and one that, more often than not, results with a prospect selecting another site. A man struck by a vehicle Friday night while walking across South Elm Street near the intersection with Ila Road was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition with a fractured skull and other injuries.

Trooper Matt Miles said Isabel Perez-Amaro, 41, of Maysville, ran across the road in front of a Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Timothy Howell, Maysville early Friday night.
