Commerce Mayor Charles L. Hardy Jr. will leave office Saturday night with a resume of accomplishments for which any politician would be proud.

But while Hardy, completing a 22-year tenure that makes him the longest serving mayor in city history, takes pride in the changes wrought over those years, it’s not his style to take credit or seek the headlines.

Recycle your Christmas tree through Jan. 8

Keep Jackson County Beautiful will host Bring One for the Chipper — when residents may recycle their Christmas trees — through Sunday, Jan. 8.

Drop-off locations will be available at the Lanier Tech campus in Commerce, Arcade City Hall, the Hoschton Depot, the Jackson County Transfer Station, the Jefferson Civic Center and the Talmo Depot.

Man passes out, someone steals vehicle

A man who passed out while visiting the Commerce Post Office early one morning suffered more than a medical setback.

According to the Commerce Police Department, a 30-year-old white male went to the post office at about 5 a.m. to check his post office box and passed out. The reason he lost consciousness was not indicated, but when the man came to he was greeted by a city police officer and taken to his grandmother’s residence.

My mother said to me when I was still a child, “Always leave the party while you are still having fun.” This is without a doubt the best advice ever given to me and could be applied on many levels to many circumstances.

The most obvious and superficial meaning is to leave any social gathering before the enjoyment of the occasion wanes so you can take with you good memories of what transpired. Enough said. Let’s look at the other levels or situations for which mother’s advice would apply.

Seven injured in 3-car wreck on Hwy. 15

A three-vehicle wreck injured seven people Thursday afternoon on Hwy. 11 near the intersection of Red Bird Drive.

Mickey Haynes, a passenger in a Toyota Tundra pickup truck traveling west toward Jefferson from the Round Barn Mattresses store, said an oncoming panel truck drifted into the westbound lane, striking the Tundra.
The truck continued in the wrong lane another 100 yards, where it struck a Ford Expedition head-on. [Full Story »]

Young wrestlers are expected to flock to Commerce on New Year’s Day for the city’s first sanctioned Team Georgia Wrestling tournament. The Commerce Wrestling Club is sponsoring the event at Commerce High School. Jackson unemployment rate drops

Statistics released last week by the Georgia Department of Labor indicate that the jobless rate for Jackson County dipped to 9.1 percent in November, down eight-tenths of a percent from the jobless rate in October.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate had its largest one-month decline since 1977, falling to 9.9 percent from 10.2 percent in October. The jobless rate was 10.4 percent in November a year ago.

Commerce's new mayor and city council received their oaths of office during a called city council meeting Thursday night.

City attorney John Stell administered the oath of office to Clark Hill, mayor; Mark Fitzpatrick, who was re-elected to the Ward 3 council seat; Steve Perry, who won in Ward 4, and to Johnny Eubanks, who was re-elected in Ward 5 without opposition. [Full Story »] 

Police dispose of live WW II grenade

The University of Georgia bomb squad detonated a World War II era hand grenade discovered last Wednesday in a Lewis Circle residence.

According to police chief John Gaissert, he was approached at a local business that day by a man who told him he’d found the grenade while cleaning out an estate, for which he was the executor.
