Relay for Life is Friday night at EJCHS

The annual Relay for Life event for Jackson County will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at East Jackson Comprehensive High School.

The survivors will be the center of attention as they kick off the event with a walk around the track.
 
“We need everyone to come out and support our survivors and caregivers,” said Sandra Fite, one of the organizers of the event. “After all, this is what our relay is all about — survivors and finding a cure so we will have more survivors.” [Full Story »]

CHS To Host Youth Football Camp

The Commerce High School football program will host its inaugural youth football camp from June 19-21 at the CHS football facilities. The camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon and is available for kindergarteners through eighth graders.

Commerce Residents Make Voices Heard At Town Hall Recreation Meeting

The City of Commerce held a town hall meeting last Tuesday at the Commerce High School performing arts center to get input on what citizens want out of their recreation department.

In attendance were recreation director Scott Rodgers, Mayor J. Clark Hill, members of the Commerce City Council, Commerce Board of Education, school administrators, coaches and citizens.

“The council wanted to dedicate our first town hall just to recreation because all of us have gotten lots of feedback from the community, and we wanted to engage the public for several reasons,” said Hill. “First, we have a new recreation director. We also are going to make a big effort to partner more with the school on projects and work more towards having rec services in town that will help our kids develop themselves. The hope is, that down the road we will have more competitive teams for our schools.” [Full Story »]

Commerce has filled one of its two key job vacancies being created by June 30 retirements.

Sandra Haggard, former branch manager of Regions Bank’s Commerce office, will be the new city clerk, replacing Shirley Willis.

Haggard, who will earn $40,000 a year, begins work on Monday, June 4. [Full Story »] 

'Overlay' district to be topic of Thursday meeting

Commerce property owners concerned about how the proposed East Jackson Overlay zoning district will affect future use of their land along state highways leading into Commerce will have one more chance to become informed before the city council votes on the district.

The council and Commerce Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Thursday night at 6:00 in the Commerce Civic Center.

Woodland Circle duo faces felony drug charges

A Woodland Circle couple had their Memorial Day weekend ruined by a Commerce Police Department drug raid.

They are Dillon Jacob Thompson, 22, 34 Woodland Circle, Commerce, charged with possession of Schedule 3 narcotics, reckless conduct, conspiracy to commit distribution of controlled substances and possession of tools for the commission of a crime; and Jade Standridge, no age available, of the same address. She is charged with possession of Schedule 2 narcotics, reckless conduct, conspiracy to commit distribution of controlled substances and possession of tools for the commission of a crime. The easy part is over.

New Commerce recreation director Scott Rodgers, by all accounts, got a lot of feedback last week during the “town hall” meeting on recreation.

It’s important to know what your constituents want, and Rodgers heard plenty. People want expanded recreation opportunities for children and adults. They want new and improved facilities, better coordination with the city school system and the county recreation program. [Full Story »]
