Junior Austin Beauchamp put on a one-man show Friday night in East Jackson's 46-30 loss to Banks County, throwing for 276 yards and three touchdowns while running for 120 yards and one score. Garbage rates for seniors may go up in Nicholson

The Nicholson City Council discussed increasing its garbage collection fees at its work session last Thursday night. It will make a final decision Thursday night at 7 p.m.

The council discussed raising the senior rate from $10 to $12 per month and the business rate from $25 to $30 per month.

The council also discussed reducing the price for two garbage cans from $30 to $26.

The council will vote on this issue when it meets Thursday, Aug. 30, for its regular monthly meeting that was re-scheduled from Monday, Sept. 3, due to the Labor Day holiday.

Like Dan Uggla of the Atlanta Braves, Commerce is in a slump.

It’s no longer the largest municipality in the county. Jefferson surpassed it years ago, both in terms of population and economy.

The city school system is now the smallest in Jackson County, the city’s utility systems, once capable of subsidizing the tax rates, no longer produce sufficient revenue to support the General Fund, and Commerce’s political influence in Jackson County is greatly diminished. [Full Story »]

Jobless rate creeps upward

Data released last week by the Georgia Department of Labor indicates that the unemployment rate for Jackson County ticked up slightly between June and July.

The numbers put the jobless rate in Jackson County at 9.3 percent, up from 9.1 percent in June. Meanwhile, the state’s unemployment rate went up one-tenth of a percentage point to 9.7 percent, which DOL attributed to a loss during the month of more than 20,000 “seasonal jobs” among public school employees. The private sector, DOL said, added 5,600 jobs between June and July.
