Like Dan Uggla of the Atlanta Braves, Commerce is in a slump.
It’s no longer the largest municipality in the county. Jefferson surpassed it years ago, both in terms of population and economy.
The city school system is now the smallest in Jackson County, the city’s utility systems, once capable of subsidizing the tax rates, no longer produce sufficient revenue to support the General Fund, and Commerce’s political influence in Jackson County is greatly diminished.
