Jackson jobless rate continues to fall

Jackson County’s unemployment continues to edge downward.

Figures released last week by the Georgia Department of Labor show the county’s jobless rate for October at 8.1 percent, down from 8.3 percent in September.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 8.7 percent in October, down three-tenths of a percentage point from 9.0 percent in September. The jobless rate was 9.7 percent in October a year ago.

It’s amazing how many drug stores our little town can support. When CVS arrived, I worried that its presence would hurt Commerce Drug, where my family has been trading since they opened the doors in 1915. But every time I went in Commerce Drug to pick up a prescription, people were three-deep at the pharmacy counter, so I felt reassured. And CVS carried an array of merchandise that kept me from having to leave town for some purchases.

But then CVS introduced its ExtraCare card: required now for getting coupons and discounts on some items. I was already carrying cards from Ingles, Dress Barn, Factory Brand Shoes, American Airlines, and Vitamin World. All of this — along with the requisite drivers license, auto insurance card, library card, Medicare card, supplemental health-coverage card, and voter registration card — was causing my wallet to bulge. And that’s without mentioning the real wallet “musts” — money, credit and debit cards, and the latest photo of my grandson. [Full Story »] 

Speeding cases lead to other charges

Officers of the Commerce Police Department pulled over six motorists for speeding during the past week. Those traffic stops resulted in nine other charges.

An officer pulled Stephanie Mitchell, 34, of 1029 Summerset Court, Monroe, over on Interstate 85 southbound for driving 88 miles per hour in a 70 mph zone. The officer wound up charging her with speeding, having an obscured license tag, driving with a suspended license and an equipment violation.

Wrestling: Eagles growing under new coach

OPINION: Fical cliff serving its purpose

For all of the angst and hyperbole over the so-called “fiscal cliff,” one must admit that the specter of impending financial doom it would supposedly create does serve a purpose — the very purpose for which it was designed.

Sadly, Congress is in such partisan standoff that the only hope it has of resolving the most serious issues is to put a virtual gun to members’ heads and force them to act. So, given that Congress could not bear during 2012 to make the very difficult decisions necessary to improve the country’s financial standing, it did the next best thing — it set a deadline for resolution with a very hefty penalty attached. Christmas will blow into Commerce this weekend, with three days of holiday activities in the downtown that begin with a candlelight shopping experience Friday night and culminate with the city’s annual Christmas Parade Sunday afternoon.
