Large Commerce distribution center gets nod
The Commerce City Council voted unanimously Monday to annex and rezone property for a 2-million square foot distribution center behind the Tanger Outlet mall.
The council voted to annex and rezone four tracts of land that total 100 acres and to rezone another tract of 70 acres that is already in the city. All of the property was zoned M-1 light industrial.
The only condition placed on the zoning was that no tractor-trailer traffic be on Steven B. Tanger Blvd.
The property is north and west of the outlet mall. Property that fronts on Tanger Blvd. and one lot that is at the intersection of Tanger Blvd. and Ridgeway Church Rd. will remain commercial.
The property will have two outlets for truck traffic – on Ridgeway Church Rd. and East Ridgeway Rd.
The Diligent Investment Group of Atlanta requested the annexation and rezonings.

BOC sets tax rates
Jackson County taxpayers should expect to soon get their 2018 tax bills in the mail following action last week by the Jackson County Board of Commissioners.
The BOC set its tax rate at a called meeting on Oct. 3. The board’s millage rates for both incorporated and unincorporated are staying the same this year, but due to a higher tax digest, the county will reap a 10 percent increase in property tax revenues.
Taxes are expected to be due around Dec. 20, officials said.
Total property taxes expected to be collected are $27 million, which is 57 percent of all county government general fund income.
The BOC is the last major local government to set its tax rate for 2018. The towns of Jefferson, Commerce and Maysville set their rates in September, as did the county’s three local school systems.
The BOC also approved the millage rates for the various fire districts in the county at its meeting last week.

Commerce rolls back millage rate
The Commerce City Council Monday night unanimously agreed to “rollback” its millage rate from 4.02 mills to 3.817.
City manager James Wascher said the rate was lowered because the city’s tax digest increased about $10 million.
The council held a public hearing on the millage rate before the vote. No one came to speak about the millage rate.
In other action, the council also approved a three-year contract for ESG to operate the pre-treatment facility at Diana Food. The company will receive about $291,000 per year for the service. ESG operates the city’s water plant now.
