Commerce has tapped a Madison County man who works for the Athens-Clarke County Library as its new library director.
City Manager Clarence Bryant announced Tuesday morning that Miguel Vicente, 45, director of the Athens-Clarke County Library’s Pinewoods branch, had accepted an offer sent Monday afternoon.
“He will begin on or about April 2,” said Bryant.
His salary will be $47,172, according to the city manager.
Vicente, who lives on Sorrow Patterson Road near Colbert, operates a library branch from a mobile home located on U.S. 29 North.
He will succeed Susan Harper, who retired Feb. 28 after serving as library director since 1995.
Pinewoods Library and Learning Center, a branch of the Athens Regional Library System, has been recognized as a finalist for Library Journal’s 2009 Best Small Library in America, an annual award sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
