The old Commerce High School gym was demolished this week as site work continues for the new CHS. By the end of the week, all that will be left of the gym will be a bare spot of ground as all of the debris is trucked to a C & D landfill.
Workers have also cleared the woods at the corner of Minish and Lakeview drives, where a sedimentation pond will be built, the tennis courts have been razed and large drainage pipes are on site.
The new school is being built on the CHS campus as students go to class in the old section. Construction of the new building is expected to begin this summer. When it is completed, the school will be able to serve 650 students. It will comprise 136,500 square feet and is expected to cost $16 million.
I'll miss that old gym. We had some good volleyball and basketball matches there-not to mention the fact that my graduation was in there. Sure, it was a little smelly and old, and the windows didn't work very well, but it was nostalgic.

My favorite memory of the old gym. In the middle 1970's I went to a homecoming dance at the gym. The band was called Raving Stone. They spent the whole night playing Rolling Stone covers at maximum volume. I was shocked when the bands lead singer came in the men's restroom during a break trying to score some pot from the cool dudes. I wonder how many people from that night are still living.
I will miss that old gym. I loved going to the varsity basketball games in the evening, playing vollyball and basketball during p.e, and also the pep rallies. I remember when a bunch of us seniors snuck into the locker room and watched I Know What You Did Last Summer on the projector. Coach Greg caught us, and we told him we were watching a disney movie. I think he probably knew that we were up to no good, but didn't give us a hard time. Lots of good memories in that gym, practice field and school. Goodbye and best of wishes to the new CHS. GOOOOO Tigers!

I have lots of memories in that old gym. I hate to see it go, but I am sure the new one will be just a good. I remember wrestling in that old gym and never once being defeated by looking up at the ceiling. There was some great basketball games played there and the memories we each shared, will always be etched into those of us who had the privilege to have shared them in that gym. I hope the new gym will have just as many memories. I also think that the new gym should be dedicated in the names of Coach Watkins and Coach Gregg, since they both spent tremendous amounts of time (usually their personal time) and dedication to the youths that passed through CHS.

Add Coach Billy Hendricks! He was probably the best all around athlete to graduate and then come back to Commerce High School to coach. Coach Hendricks seamingly lived at the High School. He even taught driver's ed. I used to laugh at his expressions when one of the students who couldn't drive were behind the wheel. Now that was funny!
