Jackson County dog and cat owners will have 17 opportunities May 6-9 to get their pets — and themselves — protected against rabies.
Commerce Veterinary Hospital and the Jackson County 4-H Club will hold their annual rabies clinics in locations all over the county.
The inoculations will cost $7, and other annual vaccinations and tests will be available for additional charges.
Last year, Jackson County had three raccoons and four skunks to test positive for rabies. More importantly, 48 animals — mostly family pets — had to be euthanized because of possible exposure to rabies.
According to Phillips, rabies is endemic in the skunk, raccoon and bat populations of the area. When pets come into contact with those animals, they’re at risk if not protected against rabies.
Georgia law requires that all cats and dogs over three months old must be vaccinated — including those that are “indoor” animals.
While as many as three-quarters of pet dogs and cats are protected, every year officials have to destroy pet cats and dogs because they came into contact with rabid animals or animals suspected of being rabid.
There were no Jackson County cases in which people had to receive the very expensive post-exposure treatment, but seven people in nearby Franklin County and four in Madison County did, according to Phillips.
Last year, 13 animals — five skunks and eight raccoons — tested positive for rabies in Madison County. Banks County reported positive tests on three skunks, three raccoons and one fox.
