Local high school seniors will turn their tassels this week at commencement exercises at East Jackson and Commerce high schools.
One hundred, sixty-four will graduate at ceremonies Thursday night at 8:00 at Eagle Stadium at East Jackson Comprehensive High School. In the event of rain, the ceremony will move into the gym.
Graduates will march onto the field through a saber arch created by the EJCHS ROTC chapter. Lydia Chung will sing the national anthem and honor graduate Christopher White will lead the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag.
Former school resource officer Allan Johnston will deliver the commencement address.
Shane Chaisson will announce scholarship recipients, Katie Minter will announce HOPE scholars, and principal Pat Stueck will present the class.
The EJCHS administration and Dr. Shannon Adams, superintendent of schools, will award the diplomas.
The EJCHS Band and Chorus will provide music.
Commerce High School
Ninety-nine Commerce High School students will get their diplomas Friday night at 8:00 at Tiger Stadium. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held the following morning at 11:00
Speakers for the occasion include Colton Brown, fourth honor graduate; Noelle Cannady, third honor graduate; Chelsey Cain, salutatorian; and Catherine Ball, valedictorian. Speakers’ messages will come from the Robert Frost poem, “The Road Less Taken.”
Javon Womack, class president, will welcome attendees, and Lauren Cooper, class secretary, will introduce special guests. Joy Tolbert, assistant superintendent, will recognize award winners, and Donnie Drew, principal, will present the class.
James E. “Mac” McCoy, superintendent, will confirm the graduation, after which Dr. Paul Sergent, chairman of the Commerce Board of Education, will present the diplomas.
The Tiger Band will provide music for the occasion, including Lavender’s “Majestic March,” Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” and Higgins’ “Laredo Concert March.”
Vice president Rubin Peek will provide the invocation and treasurer Rebekah Andrews will give the closing prayer.
