To pour or not to pour, that is the question.

It will be the question for the Maysville City Council following a vote Monday, July 13, authorizing the city attorney to draft an ordinance for the sale of beer and wine by the drink in city restaurants.

“It has been a hold item on the agenda for six or eight weeks. It was not going to go away,” said city clerk Barbara Thomas of the issue.

According to Thomas, the draft of the ordinance should be available for discussion by the council at its July 30 work session. The council will set a date for a public hearing, take input from the public at the hearing, then schedule a meeting at which the council will vote yea or nay on the ordinance.

The matter does not require a public referendum, Thomas noted. Beer and wine can be purchased by the package in convenience stores.

The people of Maysville should allow this in restaurants.The police can pick them up for DUI and the town's revenue will increase.Maybe then you won't have to worry about getting a speeding ticket for doing 30 in a 25.

Maysville is a beautiful little town and as a resident I
would love to see business be able to thrive there. Down
town Commerce has done it...why cant Maysville?

Oh boy here come the folks from the local church's with there bible thumping Bologna again.
It's a ordinance that former Mayor Presley should have done had he worried more about the cities future and less about his position in the church. With that said Mayor Baker do what's right for the city and small business owners not the crowd at Ridgeway Baptist church.
I would start with a package license for the golden pantry...not a liqueur by the drink. Since there buying it at I-85 Maysville should get in on the liqueur tax money not giving it to Commerce.

Have you ever had the responsibilities of a mayor?! There are many things that a mayor has to be concerned about to run a town. Mayor Presley did an outstanding job as Maysville's mayor, and Maysville was lucky to have a leader such as he. Behind every good politican is his faith and the good book. I don't know a politican from local government all the way to national government that doesn't have as you say "position" in the church. The church is the glue of any town, and is made up of people who live and work in the town in which they attend church. If a group that large has such a loud voice against something shouldn't the town consider this and take a step back and re analyize the situation. Maysville has fuctioned for so many years without this license, I think we can go for far longer without it. Until you have had the weight on your shoulders of being a town Mayor, don't be so quick to place the blame on someone else.

That is the problem with our corrupt little town. Full of hypocrits just like a lot of people in church. Most of the good people with the bible get drunk all day friday and Saturday then stumble to church.

Look, no one in anyway is bible thumping. I grew up in Maysville, my parents grewup in maysville, and my grandparents still live in maysville. Just because someone is standing behind their faith in every decision they make does not make them "bible thumpers" There will be a day when we will all ANSWER to the good lord above. One thing about it Mayor Pressley and Mayor Baker can say they never turned their back on God in any aspect of their life. Maybe more people should do act that way also. I dont see why people are suddenly wanting to sell alcohol in Maysville. The city has thrived with out this long, so why cant the city continue to thrive with out it.

Maysville hasn't "thrived" in almost a century. Wake up folks, it is the year 2009.

The buildings are a hazard and the commercial potential with it. Give this little town a chance. Give the alcohol purchasers the benefit of making their OWN decisions. They will buy the alcohol in Commerce and give them the revenue. Why not use their sales tax in your community?

Maysville does not need this.

I am glad mayor Presley stood for what he believed in. I would NOT want a Mayor - Governor-President that would not take a stand...THATS why you should take very serious who you vote for.
Do the math and you will see that in the end it is NOT that much money anyways

I don't attend any church reguarly...but I worship God.
and I know he loves you...John 3:16 is not bologna! I love
you too. Your soul that is. I won't point a finger or use
bible verses to make my point against alchohol...but I will
tell you from my experiences with alcohol there comes an increase
in crime...my great grandfather shot a Revenuer in Maysville because he found his still...,neglecting family...my parents were alchholics and I was neglected etc...,and it takes money to drink...I know this because my parents were always drunk and I was hungry and watched as most of our belongings were reposessed! I became an alcoholic by age 18...Praise God I did not stay a victim of alcoholism! He delivered me 31 years ago! I love Maysville and no alcohol is one of the reasons I reside there...I know the money to be made and the hearts and lives to be broken...but no matter any of our opinions it is in Gods hands and I leave it there...I asked him to keep it away from Maysville and I know he heard my prayer...his will be done.

According to this article it is already legal for convience stores to sell beer and wine by the package. If this is true why doesn't the Golden Pantry sell beer?

Reread the last line...Thomas is saying if they pass the ordinance then "Beer and wine can be purchased by the package in convenience stores." Without a referendum. NOT that they already could because the holy rollers are scared to death of it.

hey why we not let the people of maysville have a word on this. you are right the police will give you a ticket for anything. they sit at goldern pantry until they see people going through and run speeding up to the last street to radar for speeding. if we can get a new dodge when we are in a money loss than lets sell beer and wine. get with the times maysville.run with the big boys,live with the big boys

In reference to your opinion,you don't even live in the town of Maysville. You are barking up the wrong tree as far as the police force go down there, you make them out to be lazy when saying the sit at the Golden Pantry until they supposively see people speeding..im guessing your bitter about a few tickets they've given you an maybe if you abided by their speed limits it wouldnt be such a problem. But you know it's funny,when your in trouble who the first people you call?? The police,so if you can't handle them doing their job then the next time your in distress please refrain from calling 911.Maysville is a very small town,an the Golden Pantry is on the main road..so whether they're sitting there or the Fire station,library or anywhere else..it really doesn't matter.Why can't they have a new Dodge? Why can't they have new uniforms,shoes,hats,or even equipment that allows them to help them do their job?It seems to me that noses are beeing stuck where they don't belong. Just because a town wants a license to sell beer an wine doesn't mean you should bad mouth an put down the police force so please keep the actual issue at hand. If the license causes all heck to break lose..well they'll have a nice Dodge Charger to zip tight over an catch the bad guys or in your case..women!

That's the biggest joke EVER published ! They have both been deceitful in office. How many of you go to City Council meetings or have had dealings with these two outside of church ????
I don't know two men who have been MORE ungodly then these two while in office.

Let's stay focused on the topic at hand. As stated in the article, this issue had been simmering on the back burner for awhile, and it is not going away until the council votes on the ordinance as written by the city attorney. It sounds like there is still plenty of time for people to POLITELY contact their council representative. That is how a representative republic works. We hire them to represent us, and then we remind them who they represent.

The city council should vote in favor of allowing restaurants to pour alcoholic drinks. Why? I am sure the members of the city council spout off about the national govt being over bearing all the time (it is indeed). They have a chance to promote freedom right now. If they vote no, then they lose the right to ever condemn the federal govt for infringing on the right to bear arms, pray, or unfairly tax. If they want freedom for themselves they have to allow others to be free. I respect folks who do not want to buy alcohol. They have that choice already. But when they want to FORCE their views on others that is when I lose respect for them.
Let the free market decide if alcohol is a plus for Maysville. If nobody goes to the restaurant then that will prove it was a bad idea.
By the way the mayor was really in politician mode... from a quote I heard on WJJC. He said, "I don't expect this alcohol thing to go far since only one restaurant wants it". AT THE TIME THERE WAS ONLY 2 RESTAURANTS IN THE TOWN. So a true statement would have been that half the restaurants wanted the option to serve alcohol.

If your that in favor of the alcohol you should go somewhere else. This little town does not need it, you should care more about people than only yourself, if you have children or family you should care weather at some point a driver will have drank to much and got in there car and killed someone or even your family member, how would you feel then concidering you think it is ok, to bring it in to maysville. I hope you think about what is the right thing to do. Everyone has there opinion but is it for the good or bad, will it help others or hurt them.

I went to the meeting on monday,sept.14, we have to do what is right, we should vote no!It is bad enough there is alcohol in other places. God does not approve of alcohol anywhere, and there is alot of accidents involving alcohol, why would people want this brought to this town.You can make money anywhere but you can replace a life. God and people should be more important than money. Let me tell you I dated someone who drank and I left him and he never laid a hand on me before,but all it takes is just one time,he came to me and wanted to talk so I let him in, in a matter of minutes he started beating on me, for two hours he hit me and kicked me in the head and back, so let me tell you this I have experienced what alcohol can do to people, do you really want alcohol in this town. please think about this. people need God in this town and other towns not alcohol.

When you say "God does not approve of alcohol anywhere", what scripture reference are you using as a basis for your statement? I'm pretty sure it's not the one where Jesus turns water into wine for the enjoyment of wedding guests.
