Who pays the most property taxes in Jackson County?
Not surprisingly, four of the six largest tax payments during 2008 were made by utility companies, according to the office of the Jackson County Tax Commissioner.
By far the largest is Southern Power Company, whose $2.019 million bill for Plant Dahlberg in Center, is almost double that of the county’s second-largest taxpayer, Jackson EMC, which paid $1.21 million.
Plant Dahlberg is a seldom-used electric generating plant in Center that is only used during times of electricity demand peaks beyond the ability power companies’ more traditional — and less costly — generating facilities.
