A Danielsville man got such a good deal on his new car that he should have been — and was —- suspicious.
Apparently, not suspicious enough.
Commerce police charged Manuel Ricardo Nunez, 38, of 198 Morgan Road, Danielsville, with theft by receiving stolen property, driving with a revoked license and a taillight violation last week after an officer pulled him over for the equipment violation. Dispatch warned the officer that the vehicle was stolen.
According to the arrest report, Nunez, who was pulled over at about 11:18 p.m. on U.S. 441, told the officer he knew the vehicle was stolen because of the lack of a signature on the title and the $200 cost.
Nonetheless, he was apparently upset at the turn of events. The report said the officer, checking on Nunez after searching the vehicle, found that Nunez had managed to get his handcuffed hands from behind his back to his front, had taken off his belt and placed it around his neck in an attempt to choke himself.
“Why did you stop me?” the suspect allegedly said. “You should have just let me do it.”
Later, the officer found that Nunez had removed his shoelaces and was apparently trying to choke himself again. At that point, the officer said Nunez claimed to have taken 10 Xanax and 10 Lortab just before the traffic stop, but when a medical unit was summoned to the scene, EMS personnel said they saw no indication that Nunez had overdosed.
After he was checked out at BJC Medical Center, Nunez was transported to the Jackson County Jail.
