Our president has just completed 200 days in office. That is a little over six months, or roughly one-eighth of the four-year term to which he was elected last November, at a time when America’s situation was so desperate that people were trying to press him into service prior to his inauguration, and he had to remind the nation that we could only have one president at a time.
In his first 200 days, President Obama’s administration has taken charge of an economy that was in such a severe downward spiral that the outgoing administration was asking questions like “What will we do when there’s no more food in the grocery stores?” Now we are beginning to see an economic turnaround, with the stock market on an upward climb and hopeful indicators last week that even the job market is improving.
Obama’s Department of Transportation has approved 2,500 highway projects and shifted money for them into all 50 states — $9.3 billion in just his first 100 days. His Treasury Department has implemented a $2,500 tax credit to offset the cost of college tuition, saving 5 million families approximately $9 billion. And before his first two months were up, he had saved millions of acres of wilderness and thousands of miles of river from the depredations of mining and foresting on public land.
In fact, the list of his administration’s achievements in just 200 days is far, far too long to include here. It stands as a monument to what can get done when a president rolls up his sleeves and sets to work in earnest.
And now, in response, what do we have? Well, wouldn’t you just know it. From those wonderful people who orchestrated the economic disaster and then fiddled around while Rome was burning; from the ongoing implementers of Lee Atwater’s bitter politics, for which Atwater himself remorsefully asked forgiveness on his deathbed; from the very folks who gave us, not just a war begun under the “Bush Doctrine” of preemptive attack (against a country that had no plan or ability to attack us), but the electrocution of our own soldiers in the showers there, not to mention the deaths of those young American warriors who were sent into battle without armor — yes, from the very same folks who offered us a vice-presidential candidate from Bush’s own party who didn’t even know what the Bush Doctrine was, we now get “protests” organized by corporate lobbyists, with “protesters” given scripts for the rudest possible behavior, and congressional representatives being shouted down, threatened and physically intimidated.
I can’t say I’m surprised, can you? Bullying is the one thing these folks do really well, whether the arena is town-hall meetings or foreign policy. But it does make you wonder how we can talk seriously with today’s children about not bullying in school, when they can see it being done on national TV by “adults.”
Susan Harper is the retired director of the Commerce Public Library. She lives in Commerce.
Waaa, Waa, Waa. Sorry dude, your whining about spending has NO credibility after the Bushed administration.
F.G.
I wondered as I read your opinion how one could be so misguided, then I saw where you were employed. Rather than call names and point fingers I would suggest you go check out the Federalist Papers and the Constitution and read them. Then you will realize that both current parties that dominate our politics are on a course for socialism. One party, yours, makes no bones about it the other party pretends they are against and move more slowly.
What we really need are Americans standing up, like those currently opposing the socialist healthcare being pushed, for our country and not for entitlement programs.
I care about you all, but some of you make it so darn difficult!!! Just do the right thing already!!!!
Read my quote from a Christian minister below and see if any of it makes sense to you. Then read some of his writings. I am a Christian, help various charites even when it hurts, would help my neighbors if their house burned down, let someone stay in my basement if they had no place to go, give food to food banks and Christmas gifts anonymously and on occasion have given to beggars on the street if I think they won't use the money for thier detriment (drugs or booze). There will always be rich and always be poor-that is biblical also. The government cannot demand us to put ALL our money in a pot & then distribute it evenly, can they? The church as it was designed in the Bible was partly formed to help 39BPWminister to those in need, especially widows, orphans and the handicapped. We have now given this over to the Federal government. This has led to everyone standing in line to be taken care of by Uncle Sam and churches to go along with it so thay won't lose there "tax exempt" status. Is this our "false god" -our great government? Think about it.
"For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. For we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies."
The top 1% of earners also paid over 96% of the income taxes collected. So is that fair? That 1% of the earners, not Americans, but people that EARN money pay 96% of the taxes, please tell me you don't think thats fair?
Please learn something from what is being discussed. When businesses are taxed or their expenses go up they pass along those costs to the people who buy their goods. When you get a raise at work those costs of the raise are passed own to your neighbors who purchase the goods or services your company provides. Is it fair for you to ask for a raise knowing your neighbors are going to pay for it?
Please!

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage."
If George W. Bush had given the Queen of England an iPod containing videos of his speeches, would you have thought this embarrassingly narcissistic and tacky?
If George W. Bush had bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had visited Austria and made reference to the non-existent "Austrian language," would you have brushed it off as a minor slip?
If George W. Bush had filled his cabinet and circle of advisors with people who cannot seem to keep current on their income taxes, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had been so Spanish illiterate as to refer to "Cinco de Cuatro" in front of the Mexican ambassador when it was the fourth of May (Cuatro de Mayo), and continued to flub it when he tried again, would you have winced in embarrassment?
If George W. Bush had misspelled the word advice would you have hammered him for it for years like Dan Quayle and potatoe as "proof" of what a dunce he is?
If George W. Bush had burned 9,000 gallons of jet fuel to go plant a single tree on "Earth Day," would you have concluded he's a hypocrite?
If George W. Bush's administration had okayed Air Force One flying low over millions of people followed by a jet fighter in downtown Manhattan causing widespread panic, would you have wondered whether they actually "get" what happened on 9-11?
If George W. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how he inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes?
If George W. Bush had failed to send aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans, would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence? If George W. Bush had ordered the firing of the CEO of a major corporation, even though he had no constitutional authority to do so, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had proposed to double the national debt --which had taken more than two centuries to accumulate -- in one year, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had then proposed to double the debt again within 10 years, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had reduced your retirement plan's holdings of GM stock by 90% and given the unions a majority stake in GM, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to take Laura Bush to a play in NYC, would you have approved?
So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so brilliant and impressive? Can't think of anything? Don't worry. He's done all this in 6 months -- so you'll have three years and six months to come up with an answer.
And I didn't say that the government should have control of anybody's money. (Where did that come from?) I merely suggested that perhaps if you would share some of your own money, of your own volition, things might not be so hard on others......oops, for a moment there I wasn't thinking only of myself....
Peace.
You see, I work very hard (because I am so blessed as to have a job), I pay my own bills, I take a short, local vacation every-other-year or so because that's all I can afford, and it's enough....But when the family down the street's house burns down, I can give them food, or money for clothes or a place to stay, or just help them do clean-up, whatever I can, because I can.
I'm talking about every day kindness and caring done on a more grand scale, and done regularly. If you really are a Christian, then you wouldn't be missing the point and you wouldn't be trying to turn this around on me like I want to take your money away from you! I'm just desperately searching for a drop of the milk of human kindness! Sheesh!!!!
It's useless, I know.....and it just makes me so sad that this simple concept is incomprehensible to more people than not.
So go ahead, just worry about you and yours and no one else, but be sure to call me when your house burns down, 'cause I will help you, just because I can...and you are my brother.
Peace.
Your luicid didactic sobriety shuns all spurious, diaphonous duplicity and specious disonance, avoiding stilted skittish diatribes through unstaid mental tones.
Your insidious, intransigent, intrepid and most of all inscrutible lucidious nefarious prevarifications will prognosticate doom, desuetude and utter fiasco for yours
and the rest of our world if we adopt your platform.
By the way, is your world still flat?
An uneducated 5th grader
As for your comment: "I didn't say that the government should have control of anybody's money." Who do you expect to transfer this money? Will you send me on a vacation because it will bring joy and mental happiness to myself and family?
Send me my vacation package and I'll shut up.
Otherwise do the same.
1. You are implying that these people do not already donate money to charities. If you ask most nonprofits that rely on donations the majority comes from people who have money to give.
2. Most people give money becuase they feel the need, or they enjoy the feeling that comes from giving. Once you are forced to "share it" it is no longer giving. It is being stolen from you. Think for a minute when you gave money or effort to someone who needed it... Now think if that person threatend to take your home if you didn't give them the money or made you work to clean up something with threat of jail if you didn't participate.
Big difference in "sharing" and being made to share.
If I'm not mistaken the Bible teaches self sufficiency. The truly disabled and orphaned are to be taken care of by the community.
"I can tell you what the issue is, short n' sweet....people with more money than they'll ever be able to spend bitching because they may have to share some of it. So what???? You are supposed to be concerned about your fellow man's well being, you are supposed to share your good fortune, Jesus told you that. If you believe in Jesus, then you need to stop whining and start helping."
Why are you so furious with me for caring about you?
I certainly don't know every person in the United States, (neither does anyone else). I was addressing the "general" attitude of the "haves" leaving the "have-nots" swinging in the wind. Our general lack of compassion these days.
Now, according to B Thomas, I am some kind of delusional lunatic who wants the human race to march into the sea like lemmings in a doomed attempt to find utopia.
It's getting so a person can't even make a comment anymore!
Please read the Federalist Papers, The Constitution and Democracy in America. You will learn fairly quickly that the Constitution's ability to levy taxes had nothing to do with income redistribution. Once the majority realize they can vote redistribution of earned money through vote buying "entitlement" programs, think welfare, the country begins a decline that generally can't be stopped. Thats why Socialism, Communism and dictators control most of the countries on this Earth.
Self sufficiency and learning to live within ones means is very difficult. It is much easier for the lazy and cowardly to let government's manpower take from the earners and give to them. This way they, the lazy and cowardly don't have to work or risk being killed for stealing. Just let government do your dirty work.
Biblically speaking read the parts about generational growth. I may not have much but hopefully through my saving, investing working hard my children will be better edcuated and take what little I can pass on to them and help it grow. They will then be able to give more than I have and maybe one day one of my offspring will be able to give all their time to helping others who are truly deserving and still be able to provide for their own family.
When you address your knowledge of the "general" attitude of those that have; how many have you interviewed or done personality profiles with? I would be curious to know the statsistical error in your analysis of their attitudes. What questions did you ask of them to learn their attitudes and lack of compassion?
Typically opinions start with "My opinion is...." not "I can tell...". My opinion is you are blowing smoke. I don't kow you or your life circumstance so I can only base an opinion on what you have posted. If I were to say " I can tell you all that kathy is blowing smoke." would indicate that I have knowledge of you and therefore can make a statement of fact about you.
In the future you might say "Based on my experience with the one person I know who has more money than they could spend...." then everyone would know that you have limited knowledge of the "general" attitude of most people who have more money than they could ever spend.
I am NOT a "Christian". Not by your definition.
I am agnostic, with a loving heart that you can't change no matter how much you try.
Peace.
I agree with, "How do we teach children about bullying when it can be seen on TV?". I am assuming you are talking about the union people hired to intimidate peaceful citizens showing up to voice their opinions.
I also wonder how you teach children not to steal when they see their governments doing it to their parents every paycheck, every time they buy something. Even their own home can be taken from them if their parents don't fork over the extortion of property tax.
I wonder how we teach children work ethic when on TV they see people demanding more be stolen from those working so that those that don't can have more.
Yes indeed the TV is a horrible thing.
I remember when parents used to raise their children not the TV. I remember when a mom could stay home and raise her own children instead of having to work to have something* (those pesky income, property, sales taxes they just keep going up)or just a sustinance for her family.
Yes indeed before TV people were not so covetous of what others had. There was sense of pride in supporting one's own family by doing the best they could. Saving your own money for a rainy day. Yes indeed TV has ruined it all...or could it be people have changed on their own?
* Something defined: Could be a college savings account, money for doctors bills, money to invest for her children's future. Not something materialistic.
You cannot help the poor by destroying the
rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves
William J.H. Boetcker
Does that make sense to anyone out there???
I gave you a lay up on the tax issue and you blew it. If you had done just the most basic of research you could have found out that the top 1% only pay 40% of the taxes, granted they only earn 18% of the income.
I suspect all of your comments are made on shallow statements fed you by other haters of our capitalist society. If the Federalist Papers and Constitution are too heavy reading for you, Please read Democracy in America by Alexis DeTocquville.
