Fact: Evolutionists are totally embarrassed by the fossil record. There has been absolutely no transitional species from one into another. Archaeopteryx was a bird — nothing more, nothing less.
Fact: All so-called ape men from Piltdown Man to Peking Man have been debunked and proven to be frauds and fakes.
Fact: Random chance is an impossibility. Darwin himself admitted this in “The Origin Of The Species: By Means Of Natural Selection.” He said, “To suppose that the eye, with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree possible.”
Fact: Evolution violates the first law of thermodynamics (the law of conservation of energy) and the second law of thermodynamics (Entropy which says everything runs from order to disorder and from complexity to decay). In evolution, atoms allegedly self-produce amino acids; amino acids auto-organize amoebas; amoebas turn into apes; and apes turn into humans.
Fact: Evolution violates the law of non-contradiction. An “A” cannot be a “NON-A” at the same time because “A” is not a “NON-A.” Nothing cannot produce something.
In summary, evolution is not science. It is a fairy tale for adults — in other words science fiction.
Sincerely,
Joel Hammond
I think you have WAY misunderstood the editorial in question. You should go back and try to read it with a dash of humor (I understand that not many people think Mark is that funny) and maybe a bit of tolerance for the irony of its comedy.
On the other side of the argument, I suggest you try the latest and greatest, the internet. The days of misunderstanding evolution is gone. There are several sources to correct the "facts" you have misstated. I suggest http://evolution.berkeley.edu/ to get you started. After that, maybe some Richard Dawkins. I am sure that after some education on the subject, you will see that evolution is quite interesting. Much like the theory of gravity or the theories about the sun and the universe.
After all, it is a theory that has thousands and thousands examples of evidence and research. When was the last time you found scientific proof of god? I am sure that hasn't changed your belief in that fairy tale for adults. Why would tons of proof make you not acknowledge something like evolution? Lately it seems that the more proof of something, the less people are willing to believe. And then they will argue with you over something with no proof. It makes no sense. At least people are trying to discover more about evolution.
Huh, please refer me to sources, Internet or otherwise, that produce contradictions of Hammond's statements:
1) transitional forms from one species to another
2) evidence that Piltdown man and Peking man were not fakes
3) I will admit that #3 could have been better stated. But please provide evidence of random processes that simultaneously produce an increase in complexity and order in a living organism.
4) Current observable examples of when these laws are violated.
5) Ok. You got me on this one. I'm not sure of his point.
Here's the deal. Regardless of what side of this argument you fall on, the final answer still depends on faith. Huh, you appear to be substituting faith in what you refer to as a "fairy tale god" to faith in Richard Dawkins, Cal-Berkeley, Internet sources (which, quite frankly, scares me the most. Reading a few "latest and greatest" Internet sources does not make one educated.), and ultimately, yourself.
In regards to Joel Hammond’s letter to the editor concerning evolution as science fiction, I would like to offer the other side to the argument. It is true that science is based on induction, deduction, rationalization, experimentation and investigation through empirical evidence. It is because of this methodology that there is a theory of evolution. Science is about using our intellect and senses to further our knowledge. No other theory of creation so far imagined satisfies the requirements of sound science. As humankind increases in knowledge, so will our understanding of our origins increase accordingly.
Fact: No evolutionist is embarrassed by the fossil record. The fact that there is a fossil record at all is miraculous. The chances of an organism befalling the conditions in order to fossilize are remarkable indeed. Compounded to this the probability of discovering what fossils we now have is extraordinary. No. No evolutionist is embarrassed.
Fact: There are actually a multitude of transitional fossils. Better yet, all fossils are transitional, for evolution never truly stops. Current species have changed, and as long as the environment changes, so will the organisms therein. Our wisdom teeth are throwbacks to a time when we had larger jaws and less dental care. We needed new teeth in adulthood and had the room for them to grow in straight. Now they are for most of us a hindrance. Most modern day whales have beneath their skin, small, underdeveloped pelvises and hind limbs. These vestigial appendages pretty much validate them as transitional, that is, from land based animals, back to the water.
Fact: Peking Man and Piltdown Man were indeed fakes. But not Australopithecus afarensis, Kenyanthropus platyops, Homo habilis, Homo erectus, Homo heidelbergensis, Homo georgicus or Homo antecessor. I could go on, but what a boring read it would make!
Fact: Random chance is not an impossibility. Are there not lottery winners and lightning strike victims? The eye evolved from organisms exhibiting rudimentary light-detecting cells (eye spots) to more advanced specimens. This process is not far-fetched and a simple surf of the web will garner papers summing it up nicely. Just remember, the human eye is far from a perfect design and is quite distant from the top in the animal kingdom. Due to the placement of blood vessels across the retina instead of beneath it, a proliferation of vessels or a leakage can easily hamper human vision.
Fact: The theory of evolution violates no law of thermodynamics. Once again, a web search for such information is easy to come by. The problem arises out of a misunderstanding of the laws. The second law, concerning entropy is based on an over-all, or a complete or closed system. Order may flourish so long as an equal or greater disorder arises elsewhere within the same closed system. For example, a flower grows and its cell structure and DNA exhibit profound order, but for this to ultimately come about, the sun, within the same closed system, had to burn volumes of hydrogen, helium, etc., thus greater overall disorder.
Evolution is not a theory to be afraid of. We grow as a society, as a people when we embrace challenging concepts in order to further our knowledge. Evolution is not only physical though. I believe it is also mental. Our society may be in a transitional phase now, moving from the areas of hazy belief to a further stage in which knowledge may prove and accentuate new ways to believe. And as far as evolution being termed science fiction, I think that is a fitting metaphor. So were cell phones, space travel and robotics science fiction before we grew in knowledge.
I think being open to possibillities and learning is where I stand.
I like Trevor's comments about how we should evaluate what we believe and not always accept the things we did as children, or even young adults. Change is inevitable and sometimes the mental evolving we go through is what is difficult, not grasping the theories of science.
@ Trevor - dude.. you have some serious intellect there friend and I hope you will put that to good use to compensate for those of us who do not have your great mind!!!
