You know your luck is bad when you’re shoplifting and you run into a cop who knows your name and address.
That’s what happened to Melvin Appleby, 36, of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Commerce, according to the Commerce Police Department.
Shoplifter's bad luck leads to arrest warrant
The incident said that an off-duty officer was shopping at Ingles when Appleby allegedly tried to steal six bottles of Jergens lotion. The officer called him by name, identified himself as an officer and showed his badge.
The report said Appleby, who is well known to police, broke free and escaped on foot, leaving his vehicle in the store parking lot.
The officer took warrants for his arrest.
