Following a 41-0 thrashing of Lakeview Academy last week, the Commerce Tigers hit the road this Friday in what coach Steve Savage calls “the biggest game of the year.”
The Tigers will travel to Walton County to take on Social Circle at 7:30.
The outcome of the game determines where Commerce will start in the postseason. Both Social Circle and Commerce fell to Wesleyan, and the winner of Friday’s game (barring an unlikely loss to Prince Avenue) will determine whether the Tigers or the Redskins taking the number two spot in 8-A.
If Commerce can secure the number two seat for the postseason, the Tigers will start the state playoffs with a home game against a number three seed; a loss means taking the road against a number two seed.
“This one is the biggest game of the year,” Savage said.
Friday’s game at Social Circle is still old hat for the Tigers.
“We have played down at Social a bunch of times,” said Savage. “We are just going to go down there and play.”
The Tigers have a long-standing winning record against Social Circle, including a 21-7 win last year. Some of those wins were very close, including the 24-20 victory in 2006 and a 36-35 victory in 2007.
The last Social Circle win was in 2005, as the Redskins prevailed 31-21.
“It’s going to be about lining up on defense,” said Savage. “They [Social Circle] give a lot of misdirection, so we have got to be in the right place and ready to play.”
