Commerce’s 42-14 triumph last Friday leaves the Tigers with just one opponent standing between the Tigers and a second seed in the state Class A playoffs.
This week Commerce finishes its regular season play with homecoming vs. Prince Avenue.
Kickoff is at 8:00 p.m.
In spite of winning all three previous games against Prince Avenue, Tiger coach Steve Savage is not letting his guard down as he prepares the Tigers for Friday night.
“Prince Avenue always gives us trouble,” said Savage. “They are tough and hard-nosed … they give a lot of misdirection. They will give us problems, and they gave us problems last year.”
Last year, the Tigers won 22-12, but according to Savage the game was in doubt until the fourth quarter. The key to a Commerce victory this year rests solely in the fundamentals, Savage said.
“We will have to play fundamental, good football and continue to do that,” said Savage, adding that playing on the home field gives a boost to the Tigers.
In region play, Prince Avenue has only defeated Lakeview Academy this season, leaving the Wolverines with a 1-4 region record and 3-6 overall. Commerce moved to 4-1 in the region after clinching the second seed in 8-A last week.
The Tigers are 5-4 overall.
