Looking back on 2009, with its many surprises, triumphs and disappoints, there are several moments from the past year that sports fans will remember.
Whether it was on a field, court or a mat, the Commerce, East Jackson and community recreation athletes spent 2009 looking for victory across the board. Some would find it, while others look forward to next year.
While 2010 will bring some changes to each of the teams, one thing remains – the local sport fans will have plenty to look forward to. In no particular order, here are some of the top sport stories from 2009.
Nicholson Hosts Little League World Series
Nicholson was the site of the 2009 Dizzy Dean 11-Year-Old Baseball World Series in July.
Thirty-five teams took to the field in a round-robin format, with eight teams winning pool play to advance to a double elimination round to play for the championship.
EJCHS Boys Cross Country Win Region, Take Second At State
The East Jackson boys’ cross country team came back from Riverside Military Academy as the region 8-AA champs, before heading to the state meet.
Lady Tigers Break Into Sweet 16
The Commerce Lady Tigers softball team earned a Sweet 16 spot in the 2009 season.
The Lady Tigers’ state title bid ended against Eagles Landing Christian Academy, the top-ranked 7-A school.
