Architect chosen for library expansion

A Norcross architectural firm will design the addition to the Commerce Public Library.

Ann Rhoads, chairman of the Commerce Library Board, announced Monday night that Ponder & Ponder was selected from among four firms the board opted to interview. Those companies were finalists from a larger number who had responded to the board’s request for proposals.

The group conducting the interviews comprised Rhoads, board member Anne Rogers, Alan Harkness and Anna Hoover of the Piedmont Regional Library Board, library director Miguel Vicente, city manager Clarence Bryant and Brenda Elrod, who works at the University of Georgia and is a former library board member.

“We had two we really liked,” Rhoads explained. “They (Ponder & Ponder) have done a number of libraries.”

Rhoads said she expected the design process to take three to four months, and the construction phase to take about a year.
