The East Jackson Mat Eagles came home with fifth place from the area tournament over the weekend at Riverside Military Academy, with five wrestlers qualifying to move on to this weekend’s state sectional tournament.
To move on, a wrestler had to place in the top four in his weight class.
Drew Hunter placed second in the 160 lb. category. Kevin Kesler won third at 135 lbs, Charles Hulet, Wes Gutherie and Parker Wilson placed fourth at 119, 140 and 215 respectively.
Tyler Yearwood, fifth at 285, is listed as an alternate.
Others who placed include Garrett Lott (sixth, 103), Victor Equirte (sixth, 125), Zak Venable (sixth, 145) and Chase Malcom (sixth, 171)
In placing fifth, the Mat Eagles trailed Jefferson, Banks County, North Oconee and Riverside.
They beat out Fannin County, Dawson County, Walnut Grove and Oglethorpe.
The sectional tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday at Jefferson.
