Furlough day Friday in Commerce, Jackson

Don’t plan on conducting any business with the city of Commerce or the Jackson County government Friday.

Offices of both governments will be closed Friday for “furlough” days — closures aimed at reducing spending by both governments. Commerce has scheduled one furlough day a month through June — the end of its fiscal year — while Jackson County will take one furlough day each month through 2010.

On furlough days, all city and county offices except for law enforcement and emergency services will be closed.
The dates are:

Commerce

•Friday, Feb. 19

•Friday, March 12

•Monday, April 5

•Friday, May 28

•Friday, June 25

Jackson County

•Friday, Feb. 19

•Friday, March 5

•Friday, April 2

•Friday, May 28

•Friday, June 25

•Tuesday, July 6

•Monday, Sept. 13

•Friday, Oct. 15

•Wednesday, Nov. 24

•Wednesday, Dec. 22

Both governments scheduled most of the furlough days on Mondays or Fridays to provide employees with three-day weekends. In addition, Commerce tried to arrange most of its furlough days to coincide with those taken by Jackson County.

Commerce hopes to save upwards of $100,000 in direct and indirect costs through June; Jackson County expects to save $646,000 during 2010 with its furlough days.
