Two candidates qualified for the March 16 special election to fill the Ward 5 seat on the Commerce City Council.
Steve Ayers, 62, who lives on Orchard Circle, and Johnny Eubanks, 58, who lives on Northview Drive, both qualified early Monday morning.
Qualifying ended at noon today (Wednesday).
Ayers is “semi-retired” from both Exxon Company USA and Amoco Oil and works part-time assisting his son as a private investigator.
A native of Jefferson, he is a graduate of Jefferson High School and holds a degree in computer hardware technology from Total Technical Institute and Total Technical Services, Atlanta.
Eubanks is a former chief of the Commerce Fire Department, from which he retired after 29 years as a fireman and nine as its chief.
A graduate of Commerce High School, Eubanks was a certified fire instructor, a member of the Georgia Firefighters Association, was a member of the Georgia Fire Chiefs Association and was active in the Jackson County Firefighters Association and worked to help the Commerce Fire Department lower its ISO rating to Class 4.
He is a manufacturing manager for Baldor-Dodge-Reliance, Athens, where he’s worked for 40 years. He is also a member of the Commerce Planning Commission.
Early voting for the election will be held at City Hall the week of March 8-12. Balloting March 16 will take place at the J. Nolan Spear Jr. Public Safety Complex. Only residents of Ward 5 will be able to vote.
