Joe Sanders is the 2009-10 STAR student for Commerce High School.
The announcement was made Monday evening at the Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce's STAR/Teacher of the Year reception at Lanier Technical College's Commerce campus.
The son of David and Jennifer Sanders, he selected Michael Brown, an eighth grade Georgia History teacher at Commerce Middle School, as his STAR teacher.
The award is based on Sanders' score on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT). Superintendent of schools James "Mac" McCoy made the presentation.
Equally adept in the academic and athletic environments, Sanders has the highest average in his class, carries a 4.0 average in his academic subjects and, says McCoy, is a "driven, athletic, inquisitive, patient" student. He also lettered four times last year (football, tennis, basketball and literary) and this year was selected "best all around" by his classmates.
He plans to attend the University of Georgia next fall.
