Commerce is within $66,000 of reaching its $580,000 fund-raising goal to pay the local match on the $2 million expansion project.
The Commerce Library Board touched briefly on the status of the expansion project Monday night. Chairman Ann Rhoads reported that Baker & Taylor has given $3,000 to the library’s new foundation toward the project and that John Rooker is expected to send a $25,000 check “in a week or so” to meet Rooker & Associates’ commitment to the project.

“They are still working on grant applications,” Rhoads told the board. “They are getting help from Clarence (Bryant, city manager), Miguel (Vicente, library manager) and Alan (Harkness, regional library director).”
The fund-raising committee, chaired by Tricia Massey, is also following up on the other commitments toward the project.
In addition, Rhoads said Massey is meeting with local high school students on a new sign to measure the progress of the final fund-raising push.
“Each $10,000, they’ll come and update it,” she said.
Rhoads also noted that the Piedmont Regional Library Board has paid out $6,000 to the architect for the project, and the building committee has a meeting with the architect April 14.
The library plans to add 5,000 square feet. Most of the $2 million cost will come from state funds approved as part of the current state budget.
