Commerce Middle School principal Chuck Bell started last week off with good news for his faculty and students — the aggregate results of the CRCT taken earlier this spring.

“Impressive is an understatement,” said Bell. “Teachers and students attained their greatest scores in our last three years of work in eight different grade level/subject areas (not including Social Studies 5-7). Two additional grade level/subject areas equaled their greatest scores. This is another amazing effort for which we can all be very proud.”

The scores include those of students who transferred in during the middle of the school year.

The seventh grade led the effort, hitting the highest marks over the past three years in each of the categories. The percentages meeting or exceeding standards included 96 in reading, 97 in English/language arts, 95 in math and 93 in science. In addition, 89 percent of seventh graders met or exceeded standards in social studies, where the test was administered for the first time for sixth and seventh graders.

The scores are as follows:

Fifth grade: reading, 96; English/language arts, 95; math, 81; science, 96; and social studies, 87. That included a three-year high in science.

Sixth grade: reading, 97; English/language arts, 97; math, 81; science, 93; and social studies, 79. That includes a three-year high in science.

Seventh grade: Reading, 96; English/language arts, 97; math, 95; science, 93; social studies, 89. All marks were three-year highs.

Eighth grade: reading, 95; English/language arts, 94; math, 84; science, 84; and social studies, 89. Those scores included three-year highs in math and social studies.
