Employees of Commerce and Jackson County will get a four-day weekend for Memorial Day, thanks to the Great Recession.
In addition to being closed Monday for Memorial Day, both governments will hold furlough days Friday, May 28, closing all but emergency departments.
Employees will be paid for Memorial Day, but not for the furlough days, which both governments implemented in an attempt to reduce expenditures.
Commerce scheduled six furlough days, one a month for the last six months of its current fiscal year. They’re designed to save upwards of $100,000 in direct and indirect costs. Jackson County scheduled one furlough day a month for all of 2010 and expects to save $646,000.
