Summer may be a time for rest and relaxation for most students, but it’s not that way for members of the Commerce High School wrestling team.
The mat Tigers have been practicing and competing since June 1. Following several days of practice, the team took part in the Takedown Tournament on June 5, placing first among seven teams.
Among the CHS wrestlers who placed in the top three were Cody Legg, Nick Henderson, Thomas Sweeney, Serguio Rojas, Jacob Harrison, Tyler Reddish, Morgan Flint and Brian Whitfield.
Last week, according to coach Kendall Love, the team had several wrestlers that took part in a camp with Old Dominion University. This week, they will face off against various local teams at home, including Jackson County, Banks County and Jefferson.
“I have been pleased for the most part this summer,” Love said. “The guys are working and competing well against some tough opponents. I think it is really good for our young guys to get a taste of what varsity competition is all about.”
Love said his wrestlers have responded well over the last few weeks.
“We are just going to keep working the next couple of weeks to try to get better before we turn them loose for the summer,” he added.
