A fox that bit a 6-year-old boy last week as the boy rode his bicycle has been declared positive for rabies.
The 6-year-old, not seriously injured by the bite, was taken immediately after the incident to an Athens hospital where post-exposure treatment for rabies was started.
Commerce police officers shot the fox, which had taken refuge under a shed on Hill Street, and turned it over to the Jackson County Health Department, which last week got confirmation that the animal was rabid.
Meanwhile, a raccoon found acting strangely last week near the Commerce Post Office was tested for rabies but the results came back negative.
Officials warn that when wild animals like foxes, skunks and raccoons act strangely — particularly when they lose their fear of humans or become aggressive toward people — are likely rabid and should be avoided.
Still, if it had been my child, I'd have taken him to the hospital and followed the recommendations of hospital staff. Better safe than sorry.
But, any animal bite should be treated, no matter what your told.
Animal control should ride around more often in wooded areas than in the city...they will spot alot of animals. Particularly, around the Johntown area, where more trees are being cut down.
