Jackson jobless rate inches up

The unemployment rate for Jackson and surrounding counties crept back up a notch during June, following a statewide trend, the Georgia Department of Labor reported last week.

The jobless rate for Jackson County rose three-tenths of a percentage point to 11 percent in June, compared to 10.7 percent in May.


Statewide, the unemployment rate increased to 10.3 percent from the May level of 9.9 percent.

June marked the 33rd consecutive month in which the unemployment rate in Georgia was higher than the national average, which is now 9.5 percent. The jobless rate in Northeast Georgia was 9.9 percent in June.

Other area counties and their June unemployment rates include:

•Barrow, 10.3, up from 10.0

•Clarke, 8.3, up from 7.6

•Madison, 7.8, unchanged from May

•Banks, 7.0, up from 6.9
