In the end, the Commerce City Council passed its much-debated property tax increase with nary a comment.
Not only did no one attend any of the three public hearings on the tax rate, but neither did anyone on the city council speak for or against it Monday night.
That was when the council officially set the rate, passing a “millage rate resolution” to enable county tax commissioner Don Elrod to get tax bills prepared.
Commerce’s rate increased from 1.5 mills to 2.29. Archie Chaney made the motion to approve it. He, Mark Fitzpatrick, Johnny Eubanks and Clark Hill voted for the motion, with Keith Burchett and Darren Owensby opposing it — the same division of votes that has taken place at each step of the process.
The tax rate is expected to generate $408,341, about $132,000 more than last year.
On the same night, the Commerce Board of Education set its tax rate at 17.75 mills, a rate that will generate $110,000 less revenue than last year.
A mill is equal to 40 cents of taxes per $1,000 of value or $1 of taxes per $1,000 of tax assessment.
Well of course it does! Hello? Look around you! Government at all levels doesn't care about YOU as a person or as a tax payer. You are just a source of money, and THEY have the "authority" to tax you, regardless of your ability to pay or how you feel about it. They want money to spend, it isn't coming out of THEIR pockets, and you WILL PAY THEM or they will TAKE YOUR HOME.
And there isn't a thing you can do about it. Just shut up and pay.
And do you know what the worst thing is? The people of your town, county, state and country voted to PUT THESE FOLKS IN OFFICE.
So, ultimately, it is at least partly your OWN FAULT. Think about THAT the next time you vote, or the next time YOU could have run for an office, and you wouldn't.
So...just shut up and pay, like a good little tax payer.
In the so-called post-recession, there are families living for each paycheck or SS monthly payment to just make ends meet. And these people cannot afford to move out of the county. Why those officials think we have monies is beyond us. WE BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE BEING PAID TOO MANY BENEFITS and look at themselves the next time someone needs a pay increase. Must be nice to have an extra income. Maybe they can take the taxes from the so-called splosh fund.
You keep sticking your hands in my wallet and one day you'll draw back a bleeding nub where your arm has been hacked off! I propose a constitutional amendment: Anyone elected to any office of any kind has one year to fix any and all problems. After one year, they are to be sent from office and made to live for one year on minimum wage. After the MW year, they are given a second year in office, and given that year to fix any and all problems. If after two years they are unable to fix the problems, they are to forfeit all earthly possessions and grant same to the current minimum wage recepients. Um, give or take a few years, our problems will be corrected in about 4.
