Jobless rate falls (barely)

Jackson County’s unemployment rate fell a tenth of a percent during August, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.

Jackson’s jobless rate was 11.0 percent, down from 11.1 in July. Georgia’s rate however crept up a tenth of a percent to 10.3 percent.

Other area counties and their latest unemployment rates include:

•Barrow, 10.3 percent, up from 10.0 in July

•Clarke, 7.9 percent, down from 8.0

•Madison, 8.2 percent, up .3 from 7.9

•Banks, 7.2 percent, up from 7.0

•Hall, 9.2 percent, up a tenth of a percent

Meanwhile, Hancock County’s August jobless rate of 20 percent captured the dubious honor of being highest in Georgia, while Oconee County had the lowest unemployment rate at 6.5 percent.
