Some may believe to the contrary, but Jackson County’s recent layoffs of 17 people leaves the county pretty thin at staffing.

The county has more than 500 employees, but of those, about 40 are on call, as-needed workers who don’t get regular checks. Approximately 80 are part-time, and about 270 are public safety employees. The leaves about 100 full-time workers for all other functions from recreation to tax assessment.

Board of commissioners chairman Hunter Bicknell points out that 24/7 functions require five people for every slot to achieve full-time staffing. “If you have 75 people at the jail 24/7, that’s only 15 positions,” he notes. The jail requires about 70 people, as does the rest of the sheriff’s office; neither can be closed for a furlough day.

The layoffs will cause inconvenience to the public, just as the furloughs do. When the tax office is closed or it takes longer than you think it should to get a court document, have patience. It could be a matter of your tax dollars not being at work, so be happy about that.
