The city of Commerce will hold its annual residential cleanup week next week — Oct. 18-22.
That’s the one week a year that the city’s Public Works Department will haul off old furniture, appliances, mattresses and other household items at no cost to residences.
Residents are asked to separate the materials from yard wastes for easier pickup and to get their materials out to the curb this weekend.
While the cleanup officially lasts a week, it actually will take the city about two weeks to remove all of the materials, according to city manager Clarence Bryant.
“It takes the whole Public Works Department and help from the other departments,” Bryant said. “It would be really nice if people put it out the weekend before.”
One of the problems is that after one street has been cleared of materials, some homeowners will bring more items to the curb, necessitating another pickup. Bryant said the city inevitably winds up picking up items the week following the official cleanup period.
The following materials will not be picked up: construction debris, tires, paint cans and hazardous materials.
However, residents with paint cans or household hazardous materials to dispose of can take advantage of Jackson County’s “Fall into Recycling” event Saturday, Oct. 16, at the county transfer station. There they can dispose of up to six gallons of paint, paint thinner, solvents, old batteries and florescent light bulbs.
