The Commerce Board of Education accepted a bid Monday night for the new track to be constructed on the Commerce Middle School campus.
Sunbelt Systems submitted the low bid of $1,131,311, which includes the track and field, irrigation system, electrical system including lights, and fence, but not the cost of any bleachers. The bid also covers the first year of maintenance.
Superintendent James E. “Mac” McCoy said he had hoped to have a bid between $1.2 million and $1.4 million, so he was pleased to have the bid come lower than expected.
“I would like to have it completed by track season, but I don’t think that’s the case,” McCoy said Tuesday morning. “I would anticipate it being completed by the end of the school year.”
McCoy said that the track could be completed in six to eight months — but only if everything works out. He explained that surfacing of the track itself requires a specific temperature range for one layer of asphalt, a 30-day curing period and a specific temperature range for the final level.
McCoy said he expects grading to begin “within the next month.”
Commerce is the only school system in the area that does not have soccer, and there has been an increasing interest in soccer in Commerce.
