Commerce wins grant for second SRO

The Commerce Police Department has received a $147,063 grant to fully fund another school resource officer (SRO) for the Commerce School System.

Funded by the Department of Justice’s Department of Community Oriented Policing Services, the grant will fully fund an officer for three years.
Mayor Charles L. Hardy Jr. announced the grant at Monday night’s city council meeting. The city was notified via a letter from Senator Johnny Isakson.

According to Hardy, the school system has agreed that once the grant period ends it will fund half of the new SRO’s salary. The city will pay the other half.

Max Briggs is the current SRO.

Police chief John Gaissert said that the department is currently seeking a new officer and once that officer is on duty, he will post the position of the SRO for interested parties. Both Briggs and the new SRO will report to Lt. Travis Jarrell. Their allocation of time among the four city schools will be determined day-to-day according to need, Gaissert said.

The new officer “will provide a new dimension of safety for our children,” the police chief declared.
