Although it is unlikely that one percent of their populations ever met the man, Jackson and Banks counties lost a good friend when Stanley Tanger died Oct. 23.
The founder of Tanger Factory Outlet Center had a huge impact on both counties. The outlet stores he attracted to Banks Crossing generated huge amounts of sales tax revenues for both counties and provided hundreds of jobs. The Tanger Outlet Center in Jackson County remains the county’s largest tourist magnet, and there’s no way to accurately gauge the economic impact generated through his customers’ purchases of lodging, food and other products or services while they visit the outlets.
