The Upper Oconee Basin Water Authority, owner of the Bear Creek Reservoir in southwest Jackson County, spent a good bit of time last week wrestling with how to finance its boat ramp operation. Not surprisingly, the fee-for-fishing program is operating at a deficit.
As a result, the authority voted to increase the cost citizens pay to access their own lake 20 percent to 40 percent with the justification that the boating/fishing/access program should “pay for itself.”
Here’s a suggestion: Remove the attendant who collects the fees, do away with the fees and provide access 365 days a year. Not only will the four counties not have to worry about balancing the costs, but they’ll also more than double the access and save their constituents some money.
That’s a practical less-government-is-better approach to providing a public amenity, so it will not be considered by the four-county bureaucracy that manages the lake. Forgotten is the fact that the property actually belongs to the taxpayers.
The amount of money on the table is not really significant. What is significant is that a quasi-government agency is all too happy to throw obstacles out to try to prevent the public from utilizing for recreational purposes a lake for which it (the public) is paying. The authority only begrudgingly agreed to let boats on the lake in the first place, then decided to grant greater access to nearby property owners than the public at large, and now it plans increases in an unnecessary fee structure that will just further reduce public access to the lake.
During 2010, the Jackson County Recreation Department will have collected more than $20,000 in unnecessary fees. The authority’s reaction to an operation running in the red? Increase the amount of unnecessary fees being collected. How does that serve the interest of the public?
This is standard operating procedure for all levels of government.
Government "leaders" (I use the term very loosely) run the government as "us against them". Guess who the "them" are? Yep, us good old TAX PAYERS.
They do everything they can to waste tax money on anything that it can possibly be spent for, with the mentality of "if we don't spend it ALL this year, we won't be get as much in our budget for next year". After all, its not coming out of THEIR checking account, is it?
(Yes, I know…some of them do pay taxes, but they certainly aren’t paying much of what they are spending and the rest is coming from all of the rest of us! And remember, those taxes they do pay, that money is coming out of salaries that WE have already paid OUR tax money to cover! So who is REALLY paying the bill here?)
And, my goodness, how much effort they put into justifying "projects" and "costs" of just keeping the government running, because it does SO MUCH FOR US!
While everyday Americans are losing jobs, losing homes, and losing their dreams, the mob-boss mentality running our governments continue to tax and spend like we are drowning in money!
And just where is this tax money going? It must take a lot of money to pay the salaries of some of these "big dogs" in the government, since none of it seems to be going towards paying down debts for projects already callously loaded on the backs of the tax payer (hence the need for a new SPLOST!) nor is it going to pay for roads and bridges and other IMPORTANT infrastructure (hence the need for the T-SPLOST that has been such a big news maker lately!).
And yet, even with all of the SPLOST and T-SPLOST and what ever else they want to rename the additional new TAXES, the rest of the taxes already in place continue to go up and up and up and UP!
You know, as a person who actually WORKS for a living, and who has to pay these property taxes, vehicle taxes, sales taxes, income taxes, SPLOST, and all kinds of government fees any time I need to do anything out of my ordinary, every day life, I have to work within my means. I can't spend more than I bring in.
But not the government, oh no! If they want something, they just invent a new tax. Or raise a current tax. Or raise the fees. Or create a new fee.
I wonder how much longer I'll be able to breathe the air with out having to pay a fee to the city, county, state and Federal governments???
I guess it won't matter much longer, because sooner or later, these blood suckers are going to figure out that they've killed the last of their "cattle" and will begin to starve to death themselves.
It will be too late for most of us, their “enemy”, the tax payer, but at least it will be some small amount of poetic justice.
