The reconfiguration of a Maysville Road intersection is on the Georgia Department of Transportation’s agenda for 2011.
The project will widen Hwy. 98 so a right-turn lane and left-turn lane can be built from each direction of Hwy. 98 onto the side streets, according to district DOT spokesperson Terri Pope.
A traffic signal will be installed, and Wilson Road will be shifted to align better with King Road. Wilson Road will also be lowered to improve the sight distance and will get a right-turn and a left-turn lane. King Road will also get right-turn and left-turn lanes.
Meanwhile, the DOT has ordered Commerce to move forward with relocating its natural gas, water and sewer lines in the area. Windstream and Georgia Power will also be affected, according to Bryan Harbin, Commerce’s director of water and sewer operations.
“They told us to proceed with our utility adjustment schedule,” Harbin said last week. “Our big problem is that 14-inch water line, having to dig it out of the ground.”
In all, the city will relocate 2,085 feet of water lines, according to the advertisement for bids.
The city is currently advertising for bids on the water main relocation, which is expected to cost about $350,000. The relocation of the gas line is projected to cost $80,000-$90,000.
Harbin said the city will have to relocate about 1,200 feet of the main water line coming to town from its water plant.
